RAISED FOR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR CANCER PATIENTS

In 2023, 10 dedicated teams took the ice in the first-ever Hockey for Hope tournament.

Founded by cancer survivor, Shay Needham, event proceeds are providing financial assistance to QEII cancer patients who need mental health support whether it’s helping cover the costs of private counselling, therapy or the treatments they require. Her hope is to help ensure money is never a barrier to a patient’s ability to access the mental health support they need.

We hear a lot about the physical effects of cancer treatments, but the social and emotional impacts can be just as daunting. Through this annual tournament, our ultimate goal is to support the mental health of patients and survivors during every stage of their cancer journey. – Shay Needham

A patient receives cancer treatment at the QEII Cancer Centre.

Every patient undergoing cancer care — from diagnosis throughout their treatment and recovery, into survivorship — at the QEII can access mental health support through the psychosocial oncology team. But some patients need support beyond clinical therapy to cope with the realities of living with cancer. And that can come with a financial burden.

Now, with the generous funds from Hockey for Hope, patients can receive $1,000 grants through the QEII Patient Assistance Fund, easing financial strain and fostering hope.

Approximately 2,700 patients visit the QEII Cancer Care Program each week for a variety of treatments, supportive and followup care. The funding support through the grants will undoubtedly make an impact.

“The grants will help alleviate the financial stress that prevents patients from being able to access the supports that improve and maintain their mental health, beyond the treatment services they receive from Psychosocial Oncology. A priceless gift in my eyes,” says Alyson Currie, QEII psychosocial oncology social worker.
