A proud alumni of the former Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing, Gloria Stephens’ 46-year nursing career has included many milestones. The retired operating room nurse was part of the QEII’s original neurosurgery team and, years later, the first open-heart surgery performed in British Columbia following her move to Vancouver. Today, the 90-year-old Halifax resident enjoys photography, painting, camping and fishing. An avid historian, Gloria recently celebrated the release of her book, Remembering Nurses Who Served. The 2020 biography follows the lives of 200 graduates of the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing – before, during and after serving in WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. While she’s no longer on the frontlines of care, her commitment to QEII patients and their families is unwavering. A champion of many causes, Gloria is a longtime supporter of the QEII’s palliative care unit.
Her recent decision to include a charitable gift in her will to the QEII Foundation will ensure her support of families facing end-of-life continues long after she’s gone.
It’s always been an area near-and-dear to my heart. Most of my career and life has been dedicated to health care, I’m proud to support the QEII this way. – Gloria Stephens
